Putouts are a statistic credited to the fielder responsible for putting out a batter or runner. There are eighteen different ways listed in the rulebook that a fielder can be credited with a putout, but the majority will be one of these three:
- The fielder catches a fair or foul ball in flight.
- The fielder catches a batted or thrown ball and tags a base to put out a batter or runner.
- The fielder tags a runner when the runner is off the base to which the runner is entitled.
